Retail inflation eases to six-year low

India's retail inflation eased to a 75-month low of 2.8% in May 2025, driven downwards by falling food inflation, according to data released on Thursday. Inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index was last lower than this in February 2019.

2.

India marks a relative drop in gender parity

3.

Karnataka Cabinet gave nod for fresh caste survey: CM

The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for conducting a fresh Socio-Economic and Educational Survey, popularly known as caste survey. The Congress high command, on Tuesday, suggested to the Karnataka government to conduct a fresh survey within a stipulated time to address concerns of some communities who complained of being "left out." They had been petitioned by the politically-dominant Vokkaliga and Veerashaiva-Lingayat communities against accepting the 2015 report.

4.

Trump's tariffs and a U.S.-India trade agreement

At the end of the day, it was not the big fight between nations, but a case brought by five small U.S. businesses that presented the biggest challenge yet, to U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs.

5.

Urbanisation and the challenge of ideal transit solutions

Among the various aspects of Viksit Bharat by 2047, an urbanised India is sure to be a principal one as it is expected that urban India will be the engine of growth in this transformation. Let us note that over 60% of India's population would move from low-productive rural India to highly productive urban India by the 2060s. Clearly, the mobility of people on such a large scale within cities, from their residential quarters to work areas, will be a test for urban planners. While policymakers have plans to construct smart cities, where the need for the mobility of workers will be substantially reduced, the fact remains that, unlike China, we do not see many of the newly emerging smart cities coming of age. In contrast, the metros/existing tier 1 cities are on an ever-expanding spree, leading to rising challenges for policymakers, such as meeting the transportation demand of workers.

Is Bangladesh slipping into authoritarianism?

On June 7, on the eve of Eid ul Azha, the Chief Adviser to the interim government in Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, delivered a televised address to the nation, promising to hold elections in April 2026. He also announced that the country would witness the launch of the 'July Proclamation', which had been earlier planned by student activists to "bury" the Constitution of Bangladesh, as it is linked to the founder of Bangladesh and Awami League co-founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Prof. Yunus said that the document will "include a list of reform proposals, agreed upon by all parties, aimed at building a welfare-oriented state." As the interim government of Bangladesh has announced that there could be constitutional reforms, there are concerns about the country's political direction. Some worry that democratic progress has stalled. Is Bangladesh slipping into authoritarianism? Smruti S. Pattanaik and Sanjay Pulipaka discuss the question in a conversation moderated by Kallol Bhattacherjee. Edited excerpts.

From celebration to tragedy: all in a day's work

There was victory in the air in Bengaluru on June 4. After a 17-year-long wait, the city's favourite franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), had clinched the trophy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) the previous night. The team was landing in Bengaluru from Ahmedabad, and a victory parade was being planned. For a city reporter, this meant a long day.

8.

Moody's downgrade and U.S. fiscal reality

Amid the chaos set in by churning events and spurring global uncertainty, there is an interesting financial trend that mainstream analysts are perhaps missing. It is well known in economic history how certain shifts don't arrive with the roar of crisis or the panic of a crash, but with the quiet authority of inevitability - which does have a crisis bearing, a fact that often emerges post the aftermath of a shock

9.

Central schemes must pass 'effectiveness' test to continue

Schemes that are fully or partially funded by the Union government will be continued beyond the current financial year only if the "evaluation report for the scheme shows positive outcomes", proving that it has been "effective" in achieving its set objectives, and if there is a clear need to "continue the scheme in view of its mandate performance or scaling up of targets", according to a Finance Ministry circular issued on June 6.
