Context:
Recently, the Patrol Vessel named ‘Achal’, built by Goa Shipyard Ltd, has been launched for the Indian Coast Guard.
About “Achal” Vessel
• ‘Achal’ is the “fifth Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV)” out of a series of eight being built by “Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL)” for the “Indian Coast Guard (ICG)”.
• The Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) has been designed and built with strict quality standards from both the American Bureau of Shipping and the Indian Register of Shipping.
• It is made with over 60% indigenous components reflecting India’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat.
• The FPV is equipped for protection, surveillance, monitoring, and control operations, particularly around offshore assets and island territories along India’s western coast.
Key features
• The vessel is 52 meters long and 8 meters wide, with a total weight (displacement) of 320 tons.
• It is equipped with a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP)-based propulsion system, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 27 knots (approx. 50 km/h).
• Dual-class certified by both the American Bureau of Shipping and the Indian Register of Shipping, ensuring international quality.
• Budgeted at ₹473 crore, the project supports local MSMEs and generates domestic employment.
